Dr Atkins Diet

Dr. Charles Atkins was the man behind a revolutionary new diet lifestyle that swept up much of the world in controversy. Dr. Atkins took the traditional healthy eating system of the food pyramid and low-fat precautions and turned them upside down. He did this by promoting the high fat, low carbohydrate Atkins Diet that allowed such diet no-no's as bacon and mayonnaise, while cutting breads, rice, potatoes and other high carbohydrate items right out of the meal plan.

The Atkins Diet approach involves consuming food with high fats, high proteins, and low carbohydrates. The goal of this diet is that the dieter will cut out carbohydrates, and in return, start shedding off pounds. However, it is difficult to find a variety of foods that are low in carbohydrates. People get bored eating the same foods over and over again, therefore giving up the diet, and regaining the lost weight.

The Atkins Diet plan asserts that your body burns both carbohydrates and fat as fuel for its energy needs. Carbs are the first fuel to be metabolized. However, when you cut down sufficiently on your intake of carbohydrates, your body diverts from the metabolic pathway of burning carbohydrate to burning fat (or lipids) as the primary energy source. This results in weight loss.

If you're at risk for heart disease, diabetes, or have kidney problems, then you should avoid this diet. Otherwise, this can be an effective diet for weight loss. Many have complained that once you come off the Atkins Diet, you can regain the weight. The important thing is to be balanced and to pick a diet plan you can turn into a regular eating lifestyle once you have achieved your desired weight.
