Cholesterol Diet

While major diet fads and media frenzies today point to dieting exclusively as a means for losing weight and looking your best, many diet plans go far beyond aesthetic goals. For example, people that are concerned with heart problems and other health issues, are looking for a diet plan that is about a lot more than just controlling your weight. People suffering from high level of cholesterol face inherent health risks and must therefore be especially cautious about what they eat, since it is directly related to their health. The cholesterol diet is low in cholesterol and probably a healthy choice not just for people with health issues and high cholesterol, but a healthy alternative for anyone. This being said, a good question is, "what exactly is cholesterol?"

By definition, cholesterol is waxy, fat-like substance present only in animal foods. It is part of the membrane of all cells, including those in our own bodies. The body makes most of the cholesterol it needs, and thus there is no need to eat foods that contain cholesterol for most people. In addition to eggs, there are many foods that contain cholesterol. With a low cholesterol diet plan, you will either eliminate or dramatically reduce the intake of such food items.

So, how do you begin your cholesterol diet? As a first step, either cut out completely, or cut down as much as possible, on fast food. This way of eating does nothing to contribute to your overall health, and the fats these restaurants use will raise your cholesterol levels. Try to incorporate as much fruit salad and vegetables as possible in your daily diet, and use olive oil as often as needed in salads and for cooking instead of other vegetable oils. While this may be a little more pricey, it is definitely more economical than taking drugs to reduce levels of cholesterol! Dairy products, red meat, and poultry should be reduced to a minimum. However, you can enjoy plentiful quantities of fish.
