Fad Diet

The term "fad diet" seems to be the topic of many magazine articles and much media discussion today. While a number of diets have been categorized as such, what exactly is a fad diet? Generally, a fad diet is a new diet that promises rapid weight loss, prompts the dieter to purchase certain commercial products, and often claims that increase physical activity and that exercise is not necessary to achieve these goals. In addition many fad diets will allow the dieter unlimited amounts of certain foods and make health recommendations based on vague studies and questionable scientific data.

The reason for making such statements, of course, is that it lures desperate dieters to give the fad a try! By making a diet seem easy and different, it can always captivate a good commercial audience and generate profits for its creators. But what can a fad diet do for you?

Fad diets are generally not healthy. While they may prove effective at first, they generally do not provide long-term weight loss for the dieter. Ultimately, fad diets can be dangerous in the long run, especially for individuals with health issues.

Fad diets gain popularity because of advertising, media attention, or some celebrity promoting the product. Many people try the diet at first, but are quickly disappointed with its result when the weight comes back. Remember that dieting shouldn't be a quick fix. It should be a healthy lifestyle that you can maintain indefinitely. It doesn't take magic foods and pills to melt off the weight you don't want. When someone devises such a product that works, it will end a global battle with weight.
